About Essex County
Since its inception in 1683, Essex County has had a rich history. With 21 municipalities housing a population of almost 800,000, Essex County is New Jersey’s second most populous county. Most recently, it has been the industrial and financial hub of New Jersey.
After the turn of the century, the central section of the county grew rapidly when trolley lines were built to carry workers from industrial Newark to the less crowded outlying towns, and the area became known as the “trolley car suburbs”. Eventually commuter railroads passed through Newark carrying commuters to Manhattan from suburban towns.
Following the 1929 stock market crash and the enforcement of prohibition, the thriving economy of Essex was temporarily crippled. When prohibition was repealed and many breweries reopened, Essex began another period of rapid growth, and towns such as Livingston, Fairfield, Roseland and Caldwell became among the county’s fastest growing communities.

In 1962, a gentleman named Tjark Reiss, hired to design a zoo, created exhibits based on Hans Christian Anderson’s nursery rhymes and other children’s stories. By 1973, the zoo’s animal collection had grown to 850 animals of 275 species. Since, Turtle Back Zoo has become accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association placing It among the elite zoos and aquaria in the country.
Formally created in 1895, Branch Brook Park is the nation’s first county park. The area served as an army training ground during the American Civil War and is now home to over 5,000 cherry blossom trees in more than 18 varieties, making it the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States.
